Introduction – Christian life – not perfect!
Many people believe that becoming a Christian guarantees a life free from hardship. However, my journey has shown me that the reality of the Christian life often includes trials and suffering. Faith doesn’t shield us from adversity but equips us to endure it with hope and resilience. My life-changing experience at Cedar College stands as proof that faith sustains us through life’s imperfections. The truth is, the Christian life is not perfect, and my story reflects that reality.
The Reality of Life’s Imperfections
Misconceptions About a Perfect Christian Life
I once believed that accepting Christ would make life smooth and trouble-free. But the Bible presents a different narrative. Jesus Himself said, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). The Christian life is not perfect, but it offers peace and strength amid trials.
The Day My Life Changed Forever
My life changed forever on September 11, 2009. It was a sports day event at Cedar College in Northgate, South Australia. I took the day off work to support my children. While standing near the sports field, a large eucalyptus tree suddenly fell, striking me and causing severe injuries. That moment marked the beginning of a challenging yet faith-filled journey, reminding me that the Christian life is not perfect but can be endured with God’s grace.
The Accident That Shattered Normalcy
The Tree That Fell
The Eucalyptus Sideroxylon, an ironbark gum tree, fell without warning. One of its trunks struck me, pinning me to the ground. My injuries were extensive: a severed spinal cord, concussion, broken collarbone, cracked ribs, and a fractured neck. In an instant, life as I knew it was gone. This experience reinforced my understanding that the Christian life is not perfect, but faith provides strength during adversity.
Immediate Aftermath and Survival
I received immediate first aid thanks to quick action from teachers and medically trained parents. An ambulance rushed me to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where doctors discovered the severity of my condition. With a severed spinal cord at the T3/T4 level, paralysis from the chest down was inevitable. Doctors doubted I would survive due to a bruised heart and other critical injuries. Even in those moments, I held onto my faith, knowing the Christian life is not perfect but filled with God’s presence.

Facing the Pain: Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual
The Shock of Spinal Cord Injury
The diagnosis was devastating. I faced the reality of life in a wheelchair, with countless surgeries and rehabilitation ahead. The physical pain was matched by emotional turmoil. Yet, my faith became an anchor, helping me navigate this new reality with courage and determination. This journey reminded me daily that the Christian life is not perfect but purposeful.
Emotional Toll on Family
Beyond my struggles, my family also faced immense challenges. My children, Jasmine and Ben, had to adjust to seeing their father in a wheelchair. The emotional strain was heavy, yet our shared faith helped us find moments of hope amid the heartbreak. We learned that the Christian life is not perfect, but it teaches us resilience and love in the most challenging times.
Navigating the Response from Cedar College
Silence and Lack of Support
One of the most complex parts of my journey was Cedar College’s lack of support. After the accident, I expected some form of outreach from the school, but days turned into weeks with no visits, calls, or messages. It felt like I had been forgotten by the very community where the accident happened. This silence was a painful reminder that the Christian life is not perfect, even within Christian institutions.
Media Statements and Accountability
To make matters worse, the school’s public statements painted the incident as an unforeseeable accident. They mentioned that tree inspections had been done, and the fallen tree wasn’t on the list of concerns. But knowing that the day had strong wind warnings, it was hard to accept that proper protocols were followed. The absence of accountability deepened the emotional wound, reinforcing that the Christian life is not perfect, but it calls us to seek truth and justice.

Faith Amidst Brokenness
Clinging to God amid Suffering
In the darkest moments, my faith became more than just belief—it became my lifeline. I wrestled with God, asking why this had happened and how I was supposed to move forward. Prayer wasn’t always easy, but it grounded me, reminding me that while life on earth is imperfect, God’s love remains constant. This truth carried me through countless hospital stays, surgeries, and difficult days.
Why Christianity Doesn’t Promise Ease
My experience reaffirmed a vital truth: Christianity doesn’t promise ease but offers endurance. Throughout the Bible, figures like Job, Paul, and even Jesus faced unimaginable suffering. Yet, they found strength in God. I began to understand that my faith wasn’t about avoiding hardship but finding peace and purpose.
Seeking Justice and Reconciliation
Safework SA Investigation and Findings
Eventually, Safework SA investigated the incident. Their findings confirmed that the school had not fully adhered to safety protocols, especially given the day’s high winds. Cedar College was fined, and while it didn’t erase my pain, it provided a sense of validation. Someone had finally acknowledged that what happened to me wasn’t just an accident but a preventable tragedy.
Legal Battles and Relationship Struggles
The legal process that followed was draining, both emotionally and financially. Pursuing justice felt necessary, but it came with its burdens. Relationships suffered under stress, and I often wondered if I was doing the right thing. Yet, my faith reminded me that standing up for truth and accountability was part of my healing journey.

The Power of Forgiveness
Choosing Forgiveness Over Bitterness
After years of anger and hurt, I realised that forgiveness was the only way to heal. Forgiveness didn’t mean excusing the negligence or forgetting the pain. It meant releasing the hold that bitterness had on my heart. I chose to forgive Cedar College—not for their sake, but for mine. It was a step of faith, trusting God’s justice and peace would prevail.
Spiritual Growth Through Suffering
Through this journey, my relationship with God deepened. Suffering stripped away superficial comforts and made me lean entirely on His grace. I found peace in knowing that while my body was broken, my spirit remained whole. This perspective transformed my outlook on life, teaching me that true strength comes from surrendering to God’s will.

My story is not one of miraculous physical healing but of spiritual resilience. Being a Christian has never meant living a perfect life—it has meant finding hope amid imperfection. The accident that changed my life also refined my faith, showing me that God’s presence is most profound in our weakest moments. If you’re facing your trials, know this: you are not alone, and your faith can sustain you, just as mine has sustained me.
